Wilco quest builder hackathon

When we were planning the launch of the Wilco Quest Builder, which enables anyone to create interactive developer challenges in a life-like production environment, it was obvious that we need a hackathon. After all, our mission is to empower every developer to unlock their full potential, and that includes creators who want to build Wilco quests.

It’s simple, really: by empowering creators, we hope to empower their audiences and kickstart a new way for the developer community to learn from each other, support each other, and impart hands-on knowledge.

And so, we invite you to participate in Wilco’s first global hackathon. Register for the hackathon and submit a quest before January 28th, 2023, to compete for $5,000 in cash prizes. Sounds interesting? Here are the details:

Who is this hackathon for?

Anyone who wants to create a hands-on dev challenge, for any reason. Here are a few examples:

  • You’re a teacher who wants to show students what it’s like to utilize their knowledge in order to solve actual engineering problems.
  • You’re a senior developer who wants to impart knowledge by replicating a bug in production you encountered or another complex scenario.
  • You’re an engineering manager who wants to replace theoretical onboarding with a hands-on challenge.
  • You’re a content creator who has an idea for a clever workplace narrative.
  • You’re a member of a developer community who wants to engage the community with a fun activity.
  • You simply want a fun side project.

Do I need a team?

The short answer is no. You can build a quest on your own.

If you want to work with a team, however, we allow a maximum of five people per team. If you don’t have a team, you can head over to the Wilco Discord server and check the channel #find-a-partner.

What if I don’t have an idea for a quest?

Head over to the Wilco Discord server and check the channel #ideas-feedback-and-inspiration. We also have here a list of quest ideas that are in our roadmap. Feel free to use them as inspiration.

How do I win?

There are a few things you need to submit in order to win.

  • A ZIP file that includes the quest with its solutions as part of the readme. You can find all the details on how to submit a quest here.
  • Please record a 60-second demo video showcasing an overview of the functioning quest included in the ZIP. This video should be a screen recording of the quest. You are welcome to write captions, but there is no need to do a voice-over unless you want to.!
  • All contributors should be listed in the readme.
  • The quest should be written in English.
  • Once you submit the quest, make sure to fill this submission form with all the required details. If you don't submit the form, your participation will not be accounted as part of the hackathon.

When can quests be submitted for the hackathon?

While you can start working on your quest already, please submit the quests between January 8th, 9 am CET, and January 28th, 5 pm CET.

Do I have a higher chance of winning if I submit earlier?

No, but the earlier you submit, the more time we will have to review the quest and give you feedback.

How will you choose the winner?

After we close the submissions on January 28th, we will finish reviewing all submitted quests. We will then post them on a public voting page. The community will be given 5 days to cast their vote and select their favorite quest.

On February 5th at 5pm CET (11am EST), we will close the voting process. The top 5 quests will then be evaluated by our team based on the following:

  • Quest concept
  • Creativity and narrative
  • Quality of code
